BREAKING: Obama Announcement; More Cosmetic Changes to DHS Deportation Policy

In a bid to win the Latino vote, President Obama announces plan to stall the deportation of some.

Today, the Obama Administration will once again attempt to hide that they are deporting DREAM Act-eligible youth and our families.  The Obama Administration has attempted time after time to win our support with token appeasement. Coming just weeks after the June 17 Morton Memo, which still has not been implemented, it remains to be seen whether this change will provide actual relief for youth and our families.

The Good
Immigration is the stuff of storylines
More than 200 people marched July 4 in San Antonio to show their opposition to what they perceive as state-led anti-immigrant legislation and federal deportation policies that have torn families apart. Called A Day Without Immigrants March, the 2.4-mile trek from the Guadalupe Theater to Elmendorf Park was originally organized to protest Senate Bill 9 and House Bill 9, both of which failed in a special session. Both bills would have required local police to inquire about immigration status. Shouting slogans such as “We are Americans” and “We love America,” marchers expressed support for the DREAM Act.

Michelle Rhee Joins Parent Blame Game in DREAM Act Support
Education reformer and former Washington, D.C. school superintendent Michelle Rhee believes Students First and supports the rights of undocumented youth to pursue their educational dreams in the U.S. via the bill.

The Bad
She’s American in ways that matter most — let her stay

President Barack Obama should use his executive power to end the deportation of young people who are eligible for the Dream Act/ In doing so, he would demonstrate compassion for hardworking families who deserve a better deal. The president also should order the federal “Secure Communities” program to return to its original mission of deporting only murderers, rapists and drug dealers. For all his talk about the need to fix a broken immigration system, Obama appears more interested in looking like a hawk and will continue to blame Congress for inaction. The Obama administration is deporting a record 400,000 undocumented immigrants each year, more than 1,000 a day.

Screening and Enforcement: A Snapshot of Federal Action on Immigration

In the coming days, the House Judiciary Committee is expected to debate a bill introduced by its chairman, Lamar Smith, a Republican from Texas, that would require all businesses to use a federal electronic system to verify their employees’ citizenship status. The new measure is the most promising attempt in the current Congress to deal with the vexing matter of immigration, which lately has been tackled most aggressively by the states.

The Good
My Life as an Undocumented Immigrant
Jose Antonio Vargas decided to come forward and tell his story to the best of his recollection. A moving story of a young man committed to being an American and to being a journalist, forced to keep his true identity in the shadows as he pursued a reporter’s life in the headlines.

For Many Immigrants, Marriage Vote Resonates
Advocates for the two groups say that immigrants and gay people are among the last still fighting for basic civil rights. Progress for one, they say, will help the other.

White House revives push for Dream Act
In a June 17 memo, Immigration and Customs Enforcement Director John Morton said agents should exercise “discretion” when deciding who can stay and who must go. Special consideration should be given to military veterans, those who have graduated high school or are pursuing college degrees, the elderly, minors, pregnant women and those with serious health conditions, he said.

Parts of Georgia Immigration Law Blocked
A federal judge has blocked the most controversial parts of a tough new Georgia immigration law that was to have taken effect Friday. Judge Thomas Thrash granted a request to block parts of the law that penalize people who knowingly and willingly transport or harbor illegal immigrants while committing another crime. He also blocked provisions that authorize police officers to verify the immigration status of someone who can’t provide proper identification.

Michigan Legislature to Vote Soon on Immigration Bill
The Michigan House of Representatives is expected to take up two immigration bills that passed a committee last week. The bills require public sector employers to use E-Verify to check a prospective worker’s eligibility to be employed in the United States. Businesses, including subcontractors, that do not abide by the law would not be permitted to do business with government agencies for a year. The bill’s sponsor, Republican Dave Agema, says the measures will stop taxpayer money from going toward salaries for undocumented workers.

The Good
Senate’s DREAM Act is win-win for immigrants and the US
Giving up is not in Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill) lexicon. There are hundreds of thousands of these young people, DREAMERS, as they rightly call themselves, who burn the midnight oil over a physics textbook, or are doing their drills at their high school’s ROTC. They are not tossing their books or their uniforms in the trash because Republicans say no. These kids aren’t giving up, and neither will Sen. Dick Durbin to encourage his collegues to pass the DREAM Act.

Baptists Support Immigration Fix
The Southern Baptist Convention approved a resolution at its meeting in Phoenix this week advocating a path to legal status for illegal immigrants.

The Bad
The need for an immigration system worthy of America
Innocuously named E-verify, Smith sells it as an economic panacea that would protect American jobs by forcing millions of farmworkers to leave the fields. E-verify is another band-aid “fix” on a badly broken system and will force undocumented immigrants on the tax rolls into the underground cash economy costing the federal government $22 billion a year.

Number of Deportation in San Diego County
From May 2009 to February 2011, ICE agents in San Diego County submitted about 226,000 sets of fingerprints, resulting in 7,458 people being deported. Of the total number deported, about 22 percent had no criminal convictions and 2,845, or 38 percent, had lower-level crimes, according to data released by the Department of Homeland Security.

The Ugly
Alabama targets immigrant students
The new law, SB 1070, requires police to check the immigration status of those they stop, bars undocumented immigrants from receiving public benefits or even enrolling in state colleges, and makes it a crime to give a ride to an illegal immigrant. At least four other states have adopted similar measures. But Alabama’s law goes a step further. It requires public schools to determine the immigration status of their students and report the number of those who are here illegally to state officials.
