Dreaming in Ink Coming Out Workshop

  • Time: 11am-1pm
  • Where: NYSYLC Office 220 5th Avenue, 5th Floor (near the corner of 26th)
  • Facilitated by Angelique Imani Rodriguez , Sonia G and Angy

This very first workshop of Dreaming in Ink is to prepare participants for National Coming Out Day, where in the same way the LGBTQ community has historically come out, undocumented youth, some of whom are also part of the LGBTQ community, speak openly about their status.

During this session, students will be prepared with tool kits and get a rundown of safety tips if they are coming out as undocumented. The session will then focus on using poetry as a tool to express the undocumented experience when coming out. Though not mandatory, we will suggest and highly recommend participants to submit pieces at the end of the session to be posted for National Coming Out Week ( March 4th and 5th) -Undocumented , Unafraid and Unapologetic.

*In addition to this, just as stated above National Coming Out Week is around the corner. If you are interested in sharing your story via a poem, a written piece, through a photograph or video please email me at sonia@nysylc.org . If you do not have the resources( video camera ) we will also be providing dates where you can come and record your coming out story and also photographers that can take pictures with you coming out with signs and posters, email me also at sonia@nysylc.org

Introducing you:Dreaming in Ink Workshops and Angelique Imani “Sublime” Rodriguez

Dreaming in Ink open MIc

In late 2010, I  noticed a need for a creative outlet for the NYSYLC’s members, NY dreamers. With the help of poet and facilitator, Angelique Imani ”Sublime” Rodriguez, the concept of the “Dreaming in Ink” writing workshops was created.  The mission of these workshops is to provide a safe space to creatively express through the written word, issues that are often considered “taboo,” be it immigration status, sexual orientation, gender, race, ethnicity, and so on.  Through various techniques and exercises, the workshops will provide a space that allows participants to analyze and embrace their identity, strengthen their perceptions of their experiences, and acquire various tools of poetry-writing that can broaden their creativity.

Beginning with an open mic event featuring some of NYC’s acclaimed writers and spoken word artists on February 5th, 2011, the workshops will focus on three themes that will culminate in pieces featured on this website, as well as www.penhittingpaper.com, the website of the workshop’s facilitator, Angelique Imani”Sublime” Rodriguez. We will begin with a prep workshops  on March 5th  for  National Coming Out Day , in this workshop you will get a rundown of safety tips if you are coming out as undocumented, along with a toolkit and  some creative techniques.

The First official workshop  on March 12 will focus on breaking down walls and connecting as a group through creativity. The second workshop on April 9th, 2011 will focus on the use of language, description, and imagery. The third and final workshop of the first season of the “Dreaming in Ink” writing workshops will focus on self-image and identity which will take place on  May 7, 2011.

These workshops are open to all dreamers, no cost, just your presence and voice….But before we end this post, let me introduce you to the facilitator of Dreaming in Ink workshops:

Facilitator of Dreaming in Ink

Angelique Imani Rodriguezalso known as Imani Sublime, is a proud Bronx-born and raised Nuyorican who since childhood has always had a pen in her hand and her nose in a book. Her monologue “Respected,” was featured in the Latino Flavored Productions first installment of “Jose Can Speak,” and performed by Ms. Yahaira Paulino in the spring of 2005.  Her poetry has been featured in the spring 2005 release of the Black Artemis novel “Picture Me Rollin,” and she has performed at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe for the Ultimate Latina Theater Festival’s 2009 Epistle event, as well as the La Loba Poetry Series, run by Vanessa “La Loba” Martir.  She is also the coordinator of Poetry in Pink, an annual artist showcase that goes to benefit her breast cancer walk team, Maggie’s Latin Angels, in honor of her mother, a survivor.  In June 2010, she released her first collection of poetry, entitled “Les Jeux,” through www.blurb.com.  Currently studying to be a high school English teacher, she showcases her creativity and personality via her website, www.penhittingpaper.com.  A regular at the Acentos Writers Workshops in the Bronx, she continues writing poetry as well as working on a manuscript for her very first novel. Her hopes? “That my pen never runs out of ink.”
