START A DREAM TEAM AT YOUR SCHOOL!
Young immigrant youth and children of immigrants have been at the forefront of pushing for the Dream Act and Comprehensive Immigration Reform. Over the past 3 years, members of the NYSYLC have been active within their campus and have worked actively to educate, inform, activate and involve other youth to get active on the Dream Act!
To get others involve remember to Engage, Inform, Activate, Involve
- Engage: Get people interested in learning more about the Dream Act and issues that immigrant youth face by hosting events and advertising widely through poster, facebook, my space. Engage people on an individual basis by conducting 1-1's with people.
- Inform: Educate others about the issues that undocumented youth face through workshops, hosting a speaker, or arranging a conference
- Activate: Get them invested in the issues by stressing the injustice of the situation and connect folks to the Get Active Campaign
- Involve: Encourage students to become active in the Dream Act 09 Get Active Campaign by letting them know they can make a differece. Always plug in people to events that you are having and follow up with people
Campus Activism Ideas for the Dream Act 2009 Campaign:
- Participate in the May 20-21st National Mock Graduation
- Participate in our Get Active Trainings! Stay Tuned for Upcoming Dates
- Host a NYSYLC speaker at your school
- Work on a YouTube video and/or collect dreamers stories
- Combine Art and Activism: Host a play about dreamers, a spoken word night, have a video contest,
- Fundraise for the Dream: Host a bake sale for dreamers (collect monies for an event or for scholarships for immigrant youth)
- Collect petitions for the Dream Act!
- Get your College President and Student Government involved in passing a Pro Dream Act resolution
- Organize a Town Hall Meeting! Invite your congressperson to your Town Hall to talk about the Dream Act
- Hold a Dream Rally at your campus! Hold a student sit in....Check out our resources page for more info.
- Table at your school!
