USSA's National Legislative Conference
March 21-24, 2009
Washington D.C.
USSA's Legislative Conference is an annual conference held in Washington, DC, where hundreds of student leaders from across the country build long lasting relationships, are educated on up-to-date information regarding national higher education legislation and attend workshops presented by prominent non-profits on organizing around the issues students care about.
The conference culminates with the National Student Lobby Day, where students march to the capitol and meet with their elected officials, lobbying for student friendly higher education legislation.

Stories of Detention
I wanted to let you know about two powerful new immigration videos from Breakthrough (www.breakthrough.tv).
Juana Villegas: A Pregnant Woman Detained
Watch Juana relate the trauma of being shackled and detained while giving birth. She was nine months pregnant when stopped for "careless driving", but instead of receiving a customary citation, she was shackled and detained, and remained shackled while giving birth. All this because of agreement 287(g) between local police and federal immigration authorities.

Ali: An HIV+ Man Suffers in Detention
Ali has been living in New York city for 30 years with a green card. Life changed when he spent more than a year in immigrant detention where he witnessed the worst kind of physical abuse and medical mistreatment, including constantly fighting to get his HIV medication. Despite all this, Ali reaffirms that "life is beautiful"!

Update from Cuny is our Future!
Good news! Responding to pressure from students, faculty and staff, the Legislature last week voted down Governor Paterson’s proposal to take $4.2 million from CUNY community colleges midyear. Thanks everyone who sent an Act Now letter. It really made a difference.
Now the big round begins as the State Senate and Assembly consider next year’s budget cuts and tuition hikes – and the US Congress works through the federal stimulus package. Today the US Senate took most of the higher education funding out of the stimulus legislation, but we can still save in the reconciliation process. You can send a letter to Congress from the PSC website: http://www.unionvoice.org/campaign/Public_Higher_Ed_Integral_To_Stimulus_House
